You heard me, get classy! You may think drinking beer from a plastic martini glass makes you classy, but I’ve got the lowdown on something that will increase your classiness tenfold: go to YCA’s: The Chicago Annual of Style tonight at The Metro.
The event starts at 7pm and goes until 10pm and the theme of this fundraiser is Movement. Nationally acclaimed author and poet Kevin Coval will be the master-of-ceremonies and the annual fundraiser/performance series will sumptuously blend the frustration of the Chicagoan’s daily commute with the beautiful history of Chicago dance. All this will be laced with spoken word and movement performances set to music by DJ-Itch 13. To make it even better, YCA’s finest young poets will be performing old school and the night ends with a special performance by the Soul/Jazz fusion group “The O’My’s”.
Young Chicago Authors is an organization you should know about. Developed by Robert S. Boone in 1991, the program sought to help at-risk teens through the power of poetry. What began as an after-school program for inner-city teens expressing themselves through slam poetry has since given birth to “Louder Than A Bomb”, a performance series that was the brainchild of Kevin Coval and Anna West. They later took on Robb Q. Telfer, the renowned slam poet to help with the performance series. Today, “Louder Than A Bomb” has expanded it’s platform to over ten cities and states across the nation and even has roots in South Africa. In 2010, “Louder Than A Bomb” was the focus of a documentary directed by Jon Siskel and Greg Jacobs.
See what I’m saying? You should totally go to this! Bonus points? If you’re a student or teacher you only get to pay $30 for the price of admission! (It’s $50 for all us muggles)
