There’s a brand new variety series premiering tonight at 8:30pm at the Hungry Brain (2319 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60618): Between The Sheets: The Love & Sex Variety Hour! Tonight’s inaugural show will feature talented storytellers Alicia Swiz and Arch Jamjun, the comedic stylings of Sean White, the artistic renderings of Laura Szumoski and live music by Baby Money! The Second Annual Party With a Purpose, a benefit for the Chicago Writers Conference is happening at Mary’s Attic above Hamburger Mary’s (5400 N Clark St, Chicago, Illinois 60640) at 6:30pm, and tickets are still available. Help this amazing company continue to offer scholarships and special programming in our area!

In an especially exciting turn of events, Story Club is going full Mad Men and hosting a cocktail party/reading series at swanky martini lounge, JIMMY at the James Theater Chicago (610 N Rush St, Chicago, Illinois 60610) at 7:30pm. The theme for Tuesday’s show is Midlife Crisis and will feature a plethora of humorous and candid stories. Featured readers include This American Life contributor, Julianne Hill, journalist Michelle Whelan and essayist, Julia Danis. There is a $10 suggested donation.

Chicago’s favorite sinful storytelling series, The Seven Deadly Sins is back at Cafe Mustache (2313 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60647). Get there by 8:00pm and order a latte or a beer, your featured sinners for this month include the gluttonous, Larry Arroyo, the slothful Brian Costello and many more. Free event.

Never Grow Up: Zine/Comic Readings is happening at the CHIPRC (858 N Ashland Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60622) at 7:00pm featuring Sara BearHeather C and many more talented cartoonists. $5 // BYOB

A Month Of… presents Moving On at Stage 773 (1225 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60657) at 7:30pm. This potluck/reading series hybrid is one of the city’s most laid back open mics. Bring a dish to pass or just listen to stories. $10 admission // free if you bring a dish to pass. 

Thursday August 14th, 2014 

If you haven’t seen Jen Bosworth‘s wonderful new one woman show, Why Not Me, now is your chance to see it! She has a special four night gig at Theater Wit (1229 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60657). Each show’s proceeds go to a nonprofit charity of Bosworth’s choice. Shows from August 14th through August 16th, shows begin at 8:00pm, and August 17th is a special matinee show that starts at 3:00pm. Get your tickets before they sell out! Get tickets. 

What’s Your Story? An Event to Benefit CCR is happening at 6:00pm at Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art (756 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60642) and will feature performances by local literary luminaries such as Dana NorrisErin KahoaJill Howe and more. Friday August 15th, 2014 

Come out to Cafe Cabaret at Cafe Ballou (939 N Western Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60622) at 7:00pm. This series, hosted by G.P.A and Roberta Miles, weds together the beloved format of an eclectic cabaret together with the sauciness of a variety show. Don’t miss it! Donations are encouraged. 

Folk You! is back at 8:00pm at Windy City Inn (2257 W Irving Park Rd, Chicago, Illinois 60618). This folk music concert series takes its inspiration from round-robin nights held in cities like Nashville and Los Angeles. It’s going to be a great show for sure. Free show. 

I Shit You Not! is back at The Wip Theater (6670 N Northwest Hwy, Chicago, Illinois 60631) at 10:00pm. Hosted by Monte LaMonte and Michael Sanchez, this show is full of gut-clenching humor. Friday’s show of recalling bodily blunders include performances by Tony ValleVincent Lacey and more. Get tickets. 

Saturday August 16th, 2014 

As always, The Paper Machete is happening at 3:00pm at The Green Mill (4802 N Broadway St, Chicago, Illinois 60640). This series hosted by Christopher Piatt features a roster of revolving local talent and is a formidable Chicago institution. Free event. 

If you haven’t been to You’re Being Ridiculous yet, you’re sorely missing out. Jeremy Owens’ exciting and hilarious reading series puts the best of the best together at Mary’s Attic above Hamburger Mary’s (5400 N Clark St, Chicago, Illinois 60640) for a night teeming with raucous fun.
