Poetry off the Shelf will feature the talents of two brilliant poetesses tonight at 7pm at the Poetry Foundation (61 W Superior St, Chicago, Illinois 60654). Angel Nafis and Shira Erichman will be performing their poetry live. Nafis rose to prominence for her poetry anthology, BlackGirl Mansion and is a Cave Canem graduate fellow; Erichman is a three-time Pushcart Prize nominee. This event is cosponsored by Young Chicago Authors.

Don’t miss Grown Folks Stories at the DuSable Museum of African American History (740 E 56th Pl, Chicago, Illinois 60637) this Thursday at 7pm. Hosted by Cara Brigandi, Grown Folks Stories is an all-inclusive storytelling series where prospective performers can put their name in a jar, if their name is chosen the lucky performer will get to tell their story. Grown Folks Stories is also the reading series that made local luminary Lily Be fall in love with the live-lit world.

The book launch party for Juan Martinez‘s short story collection, Best Worst American will take place at 7:30pm at the iconic Women & Children First Bookstore (5233 N Clark St, Chicago, Illinois 60640) in Andersonville. Martinez’s writing has been published in McSweeney’sGlimmer TrainTriQuarterly, and other esteemed literary journals. He is an assistant professor of English at Northwestern University.
